Summertime Eyes

While most people are good about bringing sunscreen with them for their skin during the hot, summer days, many forget that their eyes need just as much protection from the strong UV (ultra-violet) rays. Eye protection is especially important because the sun can cause an increased risk of cataracts, as well as other serious eye conditions—including eye cancer.

Eye Protection

Did you know that only half of those Americans who purchase sunglasses actually check the UV rating? Don’t fall into this statistic. Sunglasses with 100-percent UV protection (or UV400) are the only ones you and your family should be focused on buying, since those are the ones that are able to block both UV-A and UV-B rays.

A hat is also a good addition to your summer wardrobe, since it can help protect your eyes from the UV rays.

Don’t forget to avoid the sun while it is at its strongest, which is usually between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. It is important to avoid this time of day because the intense rays can be harsh on your eyes. Cloudy days should also be handled with caution, since the sun’s rays can still pass through. Therefore, be sure to pack your sunglasses and hat for even the haziest of days.
